A Trip Down History Lane - Corregidor Tour

Legs up!
Riding a bike will literally get you to a lot of places and destinations. You might’ve found yourself once biking all the way to your school, work, or even around the city. What’s even more fun is that there are places that can only be reached with a bike, such as trails and single-lane roads. With riding a bike, there’s not knowing where your bike (and legs) might lead you to.

My first Intramuros ride with my fixed gear
I might be a Trail Junkie, but, hey, I also prefer taking trips around historical places. When doing such, I hit two birds with one stone: I get to ride my bike to places I don’t usually go to, and I get to learn a thing or two as well. Even before I finally settled in mountain biking as my riding discipline, I’ve ridden around historical places, such as Intramuros, Luneta, and so much more.

On the first half of 2017, me and my friends decided it was time for us to explore something new: biking in an island, and with that, we chose Corregidor as our first destination of island biking. Aside from it’s near the Metro, we learned that the island has good uphill roads and vistas to offer, so we decided to give it a try.

While waiting for the bikes to be loaded in the ferry
What we thought would be another “drawing” in fact came to life. On an early Sunday Morning last May, we found ourselves boarding for Corregidor in a ferry. The cruising company offers special trips for bikers, which excited the inner travelers out of us.

Enjoying the sea breeze

Authentic laughs from friends
The trip from Manila to Corregidor took 1 hour and 45 minutes; it was nevertheless a good trip. I was able to get some sea breeze. When we got to the island, a tour guide separated us from the other tourists as we were about to have our own itinerary around the island, and it turns out that we were the only booked bikers at the time being. The photos that I am about to share basically sums up the whole trip; photos were taken by me, Karlo Pancho, and Marc Jiro Salvador.

First photo as we landed into the island

Karlo effortlessly climbing up the hill

Corregidor has its own trails too!

Peaceful view from the top of a hill

Perfect defintion of ruins

Barracks ruins

Awesome POV shot from sir Jiro!

More than the rides, biking also served as the foundation of our friendship :)

"Pre, kala ko banayad lang akyat dito??"

My 4 year old ride lookin' good

The never ending divide between 26's and 29's!

There are a lot of trees in the area; they serve as shade and as resting areas.

Just keep on riding.

Hoping to try bikepacking in the next few years
The whole tour was tiring: it had its own share of ups and downs, as well as trails. Aside from getting to ride my bike on an island, I also got to learn more about the stay of the Americans in our country. Our itinerary was different, since some attractions can only be reached by biking. Some of the places we went to were peaceful enough for one to meditate and think about life, which gives me a reason to go back and ride the hills of Corregidor once again.
